Leaving Your Boat in La Paz? A Practical Checklist for Absentee Owners
What to check before leaving a sailboat or yacht at a La Paz marina, from access arrangements to photo records.
Before leaving, create a written access plan, a baseline photo record and a clear technician escalation path.
Start with a handoff plan
Before you leave, confirm the marina has current contact information, how it should reach you if something happens, and who may access the vessel. Put your permissions in writing. A friend, boatyard or monitoring company may be helpful, but each should have a clearly defined role. Do not assume marina staff are contracted to make routine checks of the vessel.
Record the starting condition
Take dated photographs of both sides, visible dock lines, fenders, canvas, cockpit drains and any pre-existing marks. Document what was actually seen rather than writing “all systems good.” Save this reference set securely so later observations can be compared fairly.
Separate visual checks from technical maintenance
Arrange qualified help for bilge-pump testing, electrical problems, batteries, seacocks and other critical systems. A dockside visual visit cannot certify their performance. Ask your insurer or marina whether any specific preparations are required when the boat is unattended.
Choose how often to receive updates
A useful schedule depends on the season, vessel condition, marina requirements and your tolerance for risk. Regular photo reports can show observable changes between visits, but no intermittent visit guarantees that an issue will be detected promptly.
Keep an escalation contact list
Include you, an alternate decision-maker, the marina office, your mechanic or yard, insurer and emergency contacts. Specify what a third party is allowed to do if you are unreachable. Revisit the plan before extended absences or severe weather.
